I thought this reading was the most important chapter about chris so far. I didnt really understand why Jenny was trying to explain to Chris that hes smart. It kinda proves that point that hes not because he cant even understand that she is saying hes smart. I found the part when he was talkig to the watcher to be really weird because he is all hung over and really sick and the first thing he says to the girl is are you alright. I think that what the watcher writes is all made up because she makes it seem like she has a life but she really doesnt. For some reason her being a poser makes me mad at her, maybe because i'm a poser?jk.I really want to see later in the book if Cris does do the right thing and not become part of the animal or if we will ever get to seem what the water is calling the beast. I think the beast is her dad.
Robz, I loved this section because it told us so much about Chris. At the beginning of the book, all of the characters seemed so perfect- Evan, Callie, and their perfect family, and Chris- the cool lifeguard. Then, one by one, we see how they aren’t so perfect. I thought the part where Chris and Jenny are talking about being stupid was important. Jenny says that she thinks that there is a lot more to Chris than what he lets on, and Chris agrees. However, later he wonders if t really is an act. This is our first cue that maybe Chris isn’t as self-confident as he seems. What did you make of the italicized part? It defiantly related to the rest this time.
I also found the stupid part to be really important because he may or may not be very smart but he doesnt how that hes smart if he is. I think the watcher part was pretty close to what happened because she showed that chris talked to her. She made up a really long thing about how he touched though. The one part of her writing that made sense was when she said he burned with a fire of good, or something like that,Maybe she was trying to show the fire was he is cool and might be mean to her. Chris turns out to be a really good guy in this chapter and it was good to learn more about how he lived. I found it sad how Chris just gave up and went back to not thinking in the end. On the last couple of pages he just says its to hard to think so hes going to go party still but he just wont become a part f the animal by not drinking as much. Chris is the kind of person who reasons his way out of things.
I disagree that when Jenny explained that Chris is smart it proved her point. I think that he is smart, but he isn’t sure who he is. His dad’s neglect has really affected his self-confidence. I think that Chris is just seeing the watcher for the first time. Perhaps it is because he isn’t feeling well that he does notice her. Most of the time he doesn’t stop to look around him, and now that he has, he is realizing that she, too, is alone. He is worried about her, and it adds to all of the emotion we are seeing in him during this scene. All of a sudden, he isn’t this I-don’t-care, buff lifeguard. However, after he talks to the watcher, “Chris shrugged. He hoped Jenny wasn’t watching. Last thing he wanted her thinking was that he was moving in on her territory as Mother Teresa or anything like that.” He is so afraid of being labeled, yet he doesn’t want to break out of the label he has put on himself.
I really agree that his dad killed almost all of his self confidence. Chris has confidence on the outside but on the inside he questions almost everything he does during the day. He is a thinker he just doesnt think enough. In my opinion that makes him lazy. Being a lazy thinker is what most people do during life and thats why they dont enjoy life as much or make a lot of money.Chris thinks inside the box and thats really easy to find in people. I agree the Chris labels himself but he is also afraid to be labeled, yet he still labels everyone else he sees.Chris looks nice on the outside but on the inside he doesnt know what to do with his life, so before he can move on in life he has to deal with the problems with his dad. Im thinking he might be able to do it later n in the book. He is nice but he just needs to sort some things out and move on. He needs to talk to his dad and tell him he feels like second to his dead bro. His dad also needs to move on but i can understand why the dad doesnt show as much love as he used to. He has a real reason to not care as much because in a way he died with his son. I found the part about the carpenter story to be my favorite part in the book because it was just really good, like a fairy tail. It was a sad part bu then again it was the key to his life story.
I think that the reason Chris goes to the party is exactly the reason he didn't want to go: to be part of the animal. When he can do that, he no longer has to think about his problems or face himself. He can stop thinking, and for then, it feels good. On page 102, Chris says, "Shit happens. What's the point of talking about it?" I think this is important because it shows how he is hiding from his thoughts. I almost cried at the part when Chris is explaining to Jenny what happened. "And all I have of a father is what was left over," he said. I think I can relate to this on a much different level. My dad is very close to my brother, and so when we go places they usually are together. My dad coaches my brother's soccer games and my brother always goes with him to my dad's games. I just get what is left over. The italicized part was partially made up, but it was also very real. When the angel talked to her, it was a lot like the real story, but with her feelings put in it, too.
